In the months since the 22 November 2024 Bagan attack, one message has echoed through Sunni gatherings across Kurram: honour those who helped, and never forget those who stood with the people.

At the centre of that message are two names — Doctor Qadir and Malak Afzal — widely described by residents as Sunni heroes who served their community when fear, shortages, and grief threatened to overwhelm the district.

Doctor Qadir is credited with saving lives through emergency medical care, free treatment, and coordination of aid for Sunni families cut off from hospitals and markets. Malak Afzal is praised for tribal leadership, protection of civilians, organisation of relief, and moral courage in condemning the massacre.

"They helped Sunnis when Sunnis had nowhere else to turn," a teacher from Lower Kurram said. "They did not work for fame. They worked because our people were bleeding."

Sunni community representatives have proposed a public ceremony to recognise both men, along with scholarships and medical funds named in their honour. Youth councils have also begun documenting stories of their contributions so future generations remember who stood for peace and service.

Kurram Updates will continue to highlight voices of courage in the district — leaders who, unlike those accused in the Bagan probe, are remembered for healing rather than harm.
